Indian Kennel Federation

indian-kennel-federationA Flagship Initiative of the Veterinary Association of India (VAI)

The Indian Kennel Federation (IKF), founded under the aegis of the Veterinary Association of India (VAI), is envisioned as the national apex body for pedigree dogs, cats, and responsible pet ownership. Much like the American Kennel Club (AKC), The Kennel Club (UK), and FCI (International Canine Federation), IKF is more than a registry — it is a custodian of breed heritage, animal welfare, and pet parenting culture in India.

IKF’s mission is to preserve genetic integrity, promote ethical breeding, and empower owners and breeders with knowledge and skills while aligning with the mandates of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and global best practices.

Why IKF Matters?

IKF goes beyond breed registration: it is a national movement to elevate India’s pet ecosystem through:

  • Preservation of Native & Exotic Breeds – safeguarding genetic lines and reducing inbreeding risks.
  • Responsible Pet Parenting – promoting training, nutrition, grooming, and welfare awareness.
  • Ethical Breeding Practices – ensuring pedigree integrity, transparency, and animal welfare.
  • Pet Shows & Sports – celebrating temperament, conformation, and performance through globally recognized standards.
  • One Health Alignment – integrating pet health with public health goals, including rabies eradication by 2030.

 Vision

To establish IKF as a globally respected kennel federation that promotes scientific, ethical, and welfare-centric standards in pedigree registration, breeding, and canine sports — ensuring that India’s pets thrive in harmony with people and society.

Mission Objectives

  1. Maintain authentic pedigree records with digital traceability.
  2. Promote internationally aligned breed standards in India.
  3. Conduct canine shows, agility trials, and obedience events.
  4. Partner with veterinarians for health screenings, vaccination, and genetic testing.
  5. Enforce a code of ethics against puppy mills and exploitative breeding.
  6. Promote Animal Birth Control (ABC) and vaccination drives towards a rabies-free India.

Governance & Membership

The IKF is governed by an Executive Committee and offers multiple membership pathways:

  • Affiliate Kennel Clubs – State/regional clubs under IKF umbrella.
  • Breed-Specific Clubs – For preservation and promotion of particular breeds.
  • Individual Memberships – For breeders, judges, veterinarians, trainers, and pet lovers.

Members gain access to:

  • National registry and pedigree database.
  • Training and capacity-building workshops.

Annual dog shows, agility championships, therapy dog showcases, and junior handler events to build community participation and awareness.

IKF’s Role in One Health & National Goals

IKF plays a crucial role in India’s One Health approach, working towards:

  • Rabies elimination by 2030 through vaccination drives.
  • Pet population management via ABC programs.
  • Data sharing with public health authorities during disease outbreaks.

Challenges Ahead

  • Combatting unethical breeding & puppy mills.
  • Addressing public misconceptions about purebred vs. adopted pets.
  • Ensuring enforcement of breeding laws and welfare standards.

Future Roadmap

IKF envisions:

  • Digitalized pedigree registry & universal microchipping.
  • National breeder accreditation system for transparency.
  • Breed conservation programs for endangered Indian breeds (Rajapalayam, Mudhol Hound, etc.).
  • International collaborations with AKC, The Kennel Club (UK), and FCI for global recognition.
  • Large-scale public awareness campaigns on pet ownership and adoption.

The Indian Kennel Federation (IKF) is not just a registry but a transformative force in India’s pet ecosystem. By uniting breeders, veterinarians, owners, and policymakers under one ethical and science-driven platform, IKF is preserving pedigree heritage while ensuring animal welfare and responsible ownership.

Through education, regulation, and collaboration, IKF has the potential to make India a global leader in pet culture, ensuring that the human-animal bond remains strong, compassionate, and future-ready.
